As resorts go, Meloneras is a relatively new kid on the block. Set on the southeast coast of Gran Canaria, it’s a purpose-built place that popped up to take advantage of the sheltered beach here. While it had the builders in, it decided to throw in some modern cafés and shiny, new shopping malls – and it also swung it to get the island’s biggest waterpark right on the doorstep.
Meloneras has got a 500-metre beach which comes with sugary golden sand and some small stones. The patch gently slopes into the crystal-clear water that Gran Canaria is known for. You’ve got a bit of a 2-for-1 deal here, really, as the eastern end merges with the sands of its Maspalomas neighbour. And the promenade packs in plenty of beach bars and ice-cream places.
Meloneras isn’t just about the beach. Just up the road you’ve got one of the island’s biggest theme parks – Holiday World – with its giant Ferris wheel and white-knuckle rides. And 15 minutes away you’ve got a taste of the Wild West at Sioux City – a top place for watching cowboy fights and daredevil riding stunts.
If you fancy striking out, a 30-minute drive gets to Aboriginal World in Fataga – what you’ve got here is a sort of open-air museum with over 100 life-size models of the island’s native Guanche tribe. Or you could be in the capital, Las Palmas, in under an hour.
